Walking a Commerce Township Street
Commerce address research starts with the location, not a broad name search. The county parcel system supplies a repeatable key, while the township record route supplies current tax, permit, and detailed-record options. A street directory should label the result as a parcel owner, a recorded party, a permit participant, or a historical directory entry. It cannot turn those separate records into a complete list of everyone at an address.
- Enter the address in Oakland County Property Gateway and save the displayed situs address, PIN, and CVT. The PIN is Oakland County's unique ten-digit parcel identifier.
- Use the map to click the target parcel and nearby parcels only when their relationship to the street matters. Keep each PIN with its own displayed address.
- Check Commerce Township BS&A for its address, name, or parcel search routes and its separate current-tax, detailed-record, and Building Department paths.
- Take the PIN, legal description, current owner spelling, or recorded document number to the Oakland Super Index. Compare the parties and recording date with the parcel.
- For a dated household clue, consult the OCPHS criss-cross and Bresser volumes. Use a formal voter-file request or Clerk route only within Michigan's public-record and privacy rules.
That sequence avoids a common Commerce error: treating a postal-city label or a tax mailing address as the physical parcel. It also leaves an audit trail when one long road produces several similar text matches.
Commerce Township Street Directory Keys
Use three labels when recording a Commerce result. The situs address is where the parcel lies. The mailing address is where the tax office sends correspondence and may be outside Commerce. The legal description and PIN provide the stable real-property bridge when a postal label, street spelling, lot line, or parcel configuration changes. A plat is the recorded map that can identify a subdivision's lots, blocks, and road layout. A criss-cross directory is an older address-first directory, arranged by street and house number.
- Parcel
- A defined tract of land in the tax and map system, identified in Oakland County by its PIN.
- Situs address
- The property location used by parcel, permit, and mapping records, distinct from an owner's mailing address.
- Plat
- A recorded subdivision map that can preserve a lot-and-block description when a street search is weak.
- Criss-cross directory
- An address-to-household-head index, useful for a historical street check rather than a current roster.
Commerce residents may use Walled Lake or Wixom mailing labels. The Commerce Township Community Library specifically warns of this overlap, so the PIN and township/CVT deserve more weight than postal text alone.
Commerce Township Parcel Records
BS&A is the municipal doorway for Commerce property, tax, and permit research. Its public home advertises searches by address, name, and parcel number. It also links to Current Tax Search, Detailed Record Search, and Building Department Record Search. The public crawl did not expose the exact live advanced fields, result labels, pagination, or a complete Commerce parcel card, so an entry should be confirmed with the township rather than assumed from a generic assessor screen.
Commerce BS&A's public search screen is the municipal starting point for an address, name, or parcel inquiry.
The screen confirms the three public search routes, while the unobserved advanced result fields remain a reason to ask the municipal office for confirmation.
| Field or control | Type | Required | Documented Commerce use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address | Search text | Interactive status not exposed | Homepage says records may be searched by address. |
| Name | Search text | Interactive status not exposed | Homepage says a name search is available. |
| Parcel Number | Search text | Interactive status not exposed | Township parcel-search route. |
| Current Tax Search | Navigation card | Not applicable | Current tax-record route. |
| Detailed Record Search | Navigation card | Not applicable | Application-specific drill-down. |
| Building Department Record Search | Navigation card | Not applicable | Permit and building-record route. |
BS&A describes its information as reference material. For a correction, retained history, or an unclear record, contact the Commerce Assessor or Building Department rather than filling in a missing field from another source.

Oakland County Property Gateway accepts a PIN or property address and is the practical map layer for a Commerce street directory. Its search requires at least five characters. A short address such as “1200 S,” a partial PIN, a wildcard address such as “1% Main,” or a map click can locate a parcel when a full postal string fails. Comma-separated PINs allow several already-identified parcels to be checked together.
Property Gateway's search screen shows the entry route used for Commerce street and parcel research.
The map can be panned and parcels clicked, which is useful for a street segment. Reports and map products are fee-based, and municipal source data can be updated on different schedules.
Use Print Map, Paper Options, and the scale control to preserve a map context when needed. A map click finds a parcel geometry; it does not by itself establish title or a full household.
Commerce Township Street Deed Links
Once the parcel key is known, the deed trail becomes more precise. The Super Index can search a name, address, PIN, recording date, Liber/Page, document number, or keyword. Index results are free, while document details, images, and downloads are paid. Match the legal description, document type, date, and named parties before treating a result as connected to the Commerce parcel.
The Oakland Super Index is the free index entry point for a Commerce address-derived deed search.
The image path is paid, but the free result can provide the document number, recording date, type, parties, and legal-description clues needed for a counter or copy request.
The online computer database generally begins January 1, 1964. For earlier instruments, the Oakland Tract Index describes grantor/grantee research and the paper records that reach into the 1800s. The Register of Deeds offers in-person and mail copies, not fax copies, for that older trail.
Commerce Township Street Records
A Commerce street directory works best as a record-by-record comparison. Each source answers a narrow question and has a separate access route. Parcel evidence is geographic and tax-related. A deed identifies a recorded event and its parties. Historical directories offer dated address clues. The table keeps those roles separate.
| Address record | Custodian | Street-specific clue | Documented access |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS&A parcel/tax route | Commerce Township | Current property, tax, permit, owner, mailing, and situs clues | Online route; verify fields and retention with the office |
| Property Gateway | Oakland County GIS | PIN, CVT, parcel geometry, property address, and map links | Free search and map browse; reports/maps have a fee |
| Recorded instruments | Oakland Clerk/Register of Deeds | Grantor/grantee, document, date, legal description, and recorded price when indexed | Free index; paid details/images; counter and mail copies |
| Building or ordinance material | Commerce Township | Project, site, notice, or reinspection clues when public | BS&A, office inquiry, or a narrow FOIA request |
| Criss-cross and Bresser volumes | OCPHS | Historic address-to-household-head and phone clues | Historical-society inquiry and on-site research |
For a current street question, begin with the parcel source. For a dated household question, pair the address-first directory clue with a deed, census, obituary, or another independent record family.
Commerce Township Street Requests
Permit activity can help date work at a Commerce address, but it must be read narrowly. A permit can connect a project to a site, applicant, contractor, issue date, or inspection event when those fields are public. It does not by itself prove title or current residence. Commerce requires permits before construction, alteration, addition, or demolition, and the Building Department is the correct office when a search route does not show the needed item.
No standalone public Commerce ordinance-case index was located. The Ordinance office investigates an address-centered complaint and can issue notices, reinspections, and citations. For a missing permit or ordinance record, use the Commerce Township FOIA route through the Clerk. Give the street address, parcel or PIN, record type, and date span, then ask whether in-person inspection is available and what copying or separation charge applies.
Note: A narrow Commerce request is more likely to locate an address record than a request for every record connected to a name.
Commerce Township Street Voter Limits
Michigan voter registration records are public by statute and FOIA, but the public tools do not create an unrestricted Commerce street list. Michigan.gov/Vote and MVIC are designed for an individual's registration status, polling place, sample ballot, and election information. Full birth dates, phone numbers, and driver-license or state-ID numbers are withheld. Ballot choices are not a public voter-history field.
A fuller geographic or historical voter-file request goes through the Michigan Department of State's Qualified Voter File request form, with a precise jurisdiction, precinct, address, or election-date description. Commerce has precincts and local Clerk routing, but a precinct is not a ZIP and an administrative list should not be merged into a street-wide roster. Address Confidentiality Program participants and other protected voters require extra care.
Commerce Township Street Directory History
For older Commerce addresses, reverse directories are the address-first tool. The Oakland County Pioneer & Historical Society holds North Oakland criss-cross editions from 1957, 1958, and 1960, plus the 1967–68 Bresser cross-index for South Oakland County. Search the street alphabetically and then the house number. Record the historical street spelling and any first-listed, relocation, owner-marker, or phone clue shown in that specific edition.
The 1942/43 Pontiac-Bloomfield-Hills-Commerce and 1944 Pontiac-Commerce telephone-directory titles give Commerce a particularly direct historical bridge. A Commerce exchange is only a clue, however. The 1966 county-directory sample can show that exchange alongside another municipality, so test it against the street, parcel, and a second dated source. The historical collections themselves are described in the Commerce Township city directory.
Commerce Township Street Postal Labels
Commerce is a charter township in Oakland County, while delivery labels follow postal geography. The two verified Commerce ZIP codes are 48382 and 48390. A Commerce address may appear with Walled Lake or Wixom in a mailing field, and a tax-bill address may point outside the township. Use a USPS check for delivery information, then use the Property Gateway situs address, CVT, and PIN for the parcel identity.
No official Commerce renumbering or street-renaming project was found in the reviewed sources. When an older address does not resolve, use the legal description, subdivision lot and block, former road spelling, old owner name, document number, or PIN rather than inventing a renumbering story.
Commerce Township Street Record Limits
A Commerce street directory cannot establish every person at an address. A parcel source may show a taxpayer or recorded owner, while a deed identifies people tied to an instrument and a historic directory usually names only a household head. Private household members, utility customers, delivery data, private association lists, and protected addresses are outside this public address trail. Federal DPPA limits also keep motor-vehicle address data out of a lawful street search.
Lawful use. Commerce address records support personal, family-history, property-history, and civic research. Michigan law prohibits stalking, harassment, threats, and unconsented repeated contact; never use a record to track or intimidate a living person.
When a record is wrong or protected, contact its custodian. The Michigan Address Confidentiality Program provides qualifying participants a designated address and mail-forwarding system, and a substitute address must not be used to infer an actual residence.
